Regenerative Medicine, Biologics, Hair Loss and Why It Matters

One of the hottest fields in all of modern medicine is “regenerative medicine”. The field is based on the ability to regenerate tissue. Often times the field involves the use of stem cells (often taken from fat) or from other tissue sources such as bone marrow or a variety of growth factors isolated from other tissue sources. Here the hosting tissue (i.e., hair bearing skin) is supplemented with factors to help it grow and improve the surrounding tissues. Think of it like a fertilizer for your transplanted tissue, hence using regenerative cells boosts your hair follicle transplants and in return increases the overall success rate of the hair transplantation procedure.

PLATELET-RICH PLAZMA

 

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections have been used for some time in several medical fields, such as in regenerative medicine, sport medicine, and aesthetic dermatology/plastic surgery. In the past years several studies have reported the positive results in the use of PRP for either boosting hair transplantation results or hair loss treatment. PRP is ideal for mild/moderate hair loss as an adjuvant to the other elements of the “POLY THERAPY” protocol. PRP is an autologous product that is manufactured by centrifugation from patient’s own venous blood. Its utility in the treatment of androgenic alopecia is rooted in the presence of growth factors that are important for cell proliferation and differentiation and has anti-inflammatory properties. The main growth factors are platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 and (TGF)-beta2, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factors (IGF1, IGF-2). The mechanism via which PRP is proposed to stimulate hair growth is though the promotion of vascularization and angiogenesis as well as the entry and extension of the duration of the growing cycle of the hair follicles.

 

MICRONEEDLING

 

Scalp microneedling has been explored scientifically in their ability to promote hair growth. It Has been documented as an effective methodology in several dermatologic conditions, such as acne scars and skin rejuvenation as well hair loss treatment. This in fact has been related to the ability to create microinjuries witch subsequently stimulates a modified wound-healing response. The proposed mechanism of action includes up-regulation of hair-related genes, release of growth factors (PDGF and VEGF), and activation of follicle stem cells.

 

NUTRACEUTICALS

 

Several nutraceuticals have also emerged and have been studied for their potential hair growth benefits. These are products derived from food sources that are purported to provide extra health benefits, such as prevention of chronic disease and aging, in addition to the basic nutritional value found in foods. Nutraceuticals are mostly constituted by botanicals that have pleiotropic biological effects and are able to target several cellular pathways at once. Although the mechanism of action of these formulations is not known, it is hypothesized that cumulating ingredients with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and cell proliferative ingredients has synergistic effects in promoting hair growth and reducing cellular damage at the level of the hair follicle.
